Martinos Win MGA Father & Son Championship at Tamarack
GREENWICH, CONN. (August 17, 2009) – The father and son team of Jerry and Vincent Martino of Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J., fired a three-under-par round of 68 to win the 59th MGA Father & Son Championship at Tamarack Country Club.
The Martinos’ impressive score, one stroke better than their nearest competitors, was shot in the morning, and held up as the hot, humid day wore on. Several teams shot two-under-par 69, just missing tying the Martinos’ mark. The teams who came in with 69 were Stuart andKenneth Kaufman of Sunningdale, William and Kenneth Bakst of Friar’s Head, John and Pravin Singh of Kutsher’s, Fred and Taylor Heath of Rockaway Hunting, Kevin and Tim Macken of Darlington, and Bruce and Andrew Robertson of Shorehaven. However, it was team Kaufman and team Bakst that claimed second and third place, respectively, through a match of cards.
The Father and Son event, begun by the MGA in 1951, is one of the oldest father/son competitions in golf, and is annually one of the most popular events on the MGA calendar. It is played in an 18-hole Pinehurst format, with 40 percent of the team’s combined handicap for the net division. The championship featured father/son teams competing for both gross and net prizes.
