Wilson Wins Again to Reach Quarterfinals at U.S. Juniors

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 23, 2009) – After shooting 78 in the second round of stroke play qualifying at the 62nd U.S. Junior Championship at Trump National-Bedminster, former MGA/MetLife Boys championCameron Wilson of Norwalk, Conn., was convinced he’d miss match play altogether. Now, he is in the quarterfinals, one of only eight players remaining in contention for the championship.

Wilson defeated Ben Itterman of Carlsbad, California, 2 & 1 to advance, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Logan Harrell of Huntersville, N.C. It is the third straight year that Wilson has made match play at the U.S. Junior, but this is the farthest he has advanced.

The other Met Area junior to make the Round of 16, Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y., didn’t fare as well. Liu lost a closely fought 2-up match to Nicholas Reach of Moscow, Pa. However, the 13-year-old Liu advanced farther than he ever had in this national championship.

On the Girls’ Championship side, both Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., and  Suzie Lee of East Northport, N.Y., lost their Round of 16 matches. Chung fell 3 & 1 to Victoria Tanco of Argentina, and Lee lost to Doris Chen of Bradenton, Fla.
