Eighteen Local Players to Tee it Up in U.S. Juniors
ELMSFORD N.Y. (July 20, 2009) – Proving once again the depth of junior golf talent in the Met Area, 18 local golfers ages 13-18 are competing in the U.S. Junior and U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships this week on both the Old and New courses at Trump National Golf Club-Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey. It is only the third time in the history of the two championships that they have been contested concurrently at the same facility.
There are nine Met Area junior boys competing in the event, including many who have performed well in MGA championships and competed in the Carter Cup. The boys field includes: 2009 Met Junior champion David Pastore of Greenwich, Connecticut; 2008 Met Open low amateur Cameron Wilsonof Norwalk, Connecticut; Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y.; Mark Mumford of Rye, N.Y.; Sean Kelly of Staten Island, N.Y.; Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y.; Anthony Alex of Wayne, N.J.; Charlie Edler of Fair Haven, N.J.; and Ryan McCormick of Middletown, N.J.
On the girls’ side, the nine Met Area players are Sarah Brown of Lopatcong, N.J.; Alice Choi of Whitestone, N.Y.; Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J.; Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y.; Suzie Lee of Long Island, N.Y.; Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y.; Scotland Preston of Mountainside, N.J.; Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y.; and Kuriko Tsukiyama of Bogota, N.J.
Interestingly, three of these junior stars are offspring of local club professionals. Miller is the son ofBobby Miller, head pro at Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford, N.Y., while Ryan McCormick’s father is Mark McCormick, head pro at Suburban Country Club in Union, N.J. Scotland Preston is the daughter of Mike Preston, head pro at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J.
