MGA to Debut Masters Tournament in 2011

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (November 15, 2010)- The Metropolitan Golf Association is pleased to announce the addition of the inaugural MGA Masters Tournament to the 2011 schedule, which will take place on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Country Club of Fairfield in Fairfield, Conn. The 18-hole stroke play competition is the first new MGA championship in four years and will feature 96 players aged 65 years and older from across the Met Area who will compete on one of the most renowned courses in the section.

Seventh hole, Country Club of Fairfield.“With senior golf so popular, the MGA Tournament Committee felt the time was right to add an upscale tournament attracting the area’s best golfers age 65 and older,” said MGA Tournament Director Brian R. Mahoney. “With an inaugural host site like the Country Club of Fairfield, the MGA looks forward to continuing its championship tradition that Met Area golfers have come to expect.”

The MGA Masters Tournament is the first new championship on the MGA schedule since the MGA Mid-Amateur Championship debuted in 2007. The tournament is open to male amateur members of MGA Member Clubs who will have reached their sixty-fifth birthday by September 21, 2011 and have a current USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 10.0. Players will compete for both gross and net prizes.

The Country Club of Fairfield will be hosting its first MGA championship since the 2008 Met Open, which was won by Mark Mielke. The club also hosted the 1994 MGA Father & Son Championship, won by Peter and Greg Bisconti, in addition to three Met PGA Section Championships (1985, 1991, 2002). The outstanding par-70 layout was designed by Seth Raynor and stretches to 6,370 yards. The links-style course, which overlooks the Long Island Sound, will provide a true challenge to competitors as well as a spectacular backdrop for the inaugural MGA Masters Tournament.

The MGA Masters Tournament will be one of 18 championships conducted by the MGA in 2011. Registration will open in January and the entry fee, which includes lunch, cart and a post-tournament cocktail reception, is $200 per golfer.
