ELMSFORD, N.Y. (December 8, 2011) – Gene Bernstein of the Meadow Brook Club was elected to a second one-year term as President of the Metropolitan Golf Association at the Association’s 114th Annual Meeting, held on Wednesday, December 7 at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y. Mr. Bernstein will head a 25-member Executive Committee as well as serve as Chairman of the Association’s charitable Foundation.

Also re-elected at the Annual Meeting were Jeffrey R. Holzschuh of Winged Foot Golf Club as Vice President; and Stephen F. Boyd of Baltusrol Golf Club as Treasurer/Secretary. Both will serve a second one-year term in 2012.

Bernstein, 64, became a member of the MGA Executive Committee in 2002, and served as Secretary in 2007 and 2008 and as Vice President in 2009 and 2010. He has been an active member of The Met Golfer editorial committee over the entire period and serves on the board of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York.

Bernstein earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in English Literature, a subject he taught for eight years as a professor at both the University of Notre Dame and the University of Arizona. He is the chairman and past president of Northville Industries, the petroleum marketing division of NIC Holding Corp., based in Melville, N.Y. Bernstein co-founded and served as the general chairman of the Northville Long Island Classic, a successful Champions Tour event that had a 21-year run ending in 2008 as the Commerce Bank Classic. The Northville Classic won the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award in 1996.

He currently serves on several boards, including those of Alfred University, the Institute for Student Achievement, the Nassau County Police Department Foundation, and the Conference of Governing Boards, which is comprised of 3,000 trustees of private colleges and universities in New York. He has received numerous awards and honors over the years, among them the 2010 Long Island Association Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award and the 2002 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Bernstein’s first year as President of the MGA was marked by many changes to the Association, including a complete rebranding effort, new website and mobile app, and the MGA’s move into a new 6,500 square foot building.

The MGA’s Executive Committee also includes six newly elected members: Gregg M. Angelillo of Baltusrol Golf Club; Joseph D. Bardon of Canoe Brook Country Club; Robert Bluestone of Rockrimmon Country Club; Norman A. Feinstein of Mountain Ridge Country Club; Dennis Lynch of Nassau Players Club; and Michael X. McBride of Arcola Country Club. They will also now serve on the Foundation Board of Directors.

More than 225 club delegates, MGA committeemen, members of the press and representatives of the local and national golf communities attended the Annual Meeting. The highlights of the meeting were the presentations of the Association’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to longtime Director of Bethpage David Catalano and the MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award to Michael Miller of Knollwood Country Club.

The MGA was founded in 1897 and is one of the nation’s oldest and largest regional golf associations, with 570 member clubs in the tri-state Metropolitan Area.
