Speisers of Brae Burn Win MGA Father & Son Net Tournament

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (August 8, 2011) - Michael and Evan Speiser shot an 18-hole net score of six-under-par 64 to win today’s 22nd MGA Father & Son Net Tournament, held at Lawrence Golf Club in Lawrence, N.Y. Michael and son Evan play out of Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., and claimed their first MGA championship title by a narrow one-stroke margin.

Coming in at runner-up behind the Speisers were last year’s champions, Peter Rubeo Jr. and Peter Rubeo III. The Rubeos, playing out of Mohansic, stormed out of the gate in their bid at becoming the first two-time winners of the championship and made the turn at four-under with a front-nine 31, only to cool off slightly on the back nine, coming in with 34 strokes for a total of 65.

Today’s championship also awarded the best gross score, with that honor going to first-time winners Robert and Brian Kehoe. Robert plays out of the MGA eClub in Westchester/Fairfield while son Brian plays out of the Met PGA Junior Golf Club. The duo shot a gross total of even-par 70.

This marks the 22nd edition of the rapidly expanding Father & Son championships at the Metropolitan Golf Association. Like next week’s gross championship, today’s net competition was played in a Pinehurst format which encourages equal participation and sportsmanship between the teammates.
