Yong Earns Medalist Honors; Match-Play Up Next at 107th Met Junior

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (July 15, 2024)Alex Yong of Stockton, N.J. earned medalist honors, and a 5-for-2 playoff set the final two spots in the 16-man match-play bracket at the 107th Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife on Monday at Sunningdale Country Club.

Rhett DuPont of New Cannan, Conn., Luke Krombholtz of Metuchen, N.J., Tommy Mangan of Harrison, N.Y., Ethan Weinberg of Marlboro, N.J., and Harry Wolk of Dix Hills, N.Y., were in the playoff. The quintet finished at 7-over par after 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. Mangan birdied his last hole of the day to make the playoff.

It only took one hole to find the two who advanced through. Weiberg and Wolk advanced with pars on the first playoff hole, the par-4 first. Weinberg will be the No. 16 seed and open match play against Yong. Wolk will be the No. 15 seed and will face Jack Chung Greenwich, Conn., to open match play.

Yong was the medalist and will be the top seed in the match-play bracket. Yong finished at 7-under par over the 36 holes of qualifying on Monday. Yong posted a 3-under par 67 and followed with a 4-under 66 to finish four shots clear. Yong birdied four of his first six holes in round two. Yong wrapped up his round with a birdie on the par-5 16th and par-4 18th. 

Chung was the only other golfer to record a pair of under-par rounds with an opening round 68 and a second round 69. Chung closed his second round with three straight birdies on Nos. 6, 7, and 8.

Dean Muratore of Dix Hills, N.Y., and Liam Pasternak of Morristown, N.J. also finished under par at 2-under and 1-under, respectively, to qualify third and fourth.  

Zachary Munno of Stamford, Conn., and Chad Ruggiero of Greenwich, Conn. finished at even par and will the six and five seeds, respectively. Harrison Browne of Westport, Conn., 2-over, and Lucas Rizo-Patron of Rye, N.Y., 3-over, are the No. 7 and 8 seeds.

Lance Hollingshead of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Matthew DiFiore of Malverne, N.Y., finished in a tie for ninth at 4-over. DiFiore is the No. 9 seed. and Hollingshead is the No. 10 seed. There was a four-way tie for 11th at 5-over par between Michael Clifford-Levy of East Hampton, N.Y., Liam Moloney of Chester, N.Y., Quinn Egan from White Plains, N.Y., and Harry Cohen of Wyckoff, N.J. Egan is the No. 11 seed, Moloney is No. 12, the No. 13 seed is Cohen, and Clifford-Levy is the No. 14 seed.

Match play starts with the Round of 16 at 7:30 a.m. Based on the results of the Round of 16 matches, the quarterfinal round will follow.

Sunningdale last hosted the junior in 1938, when William Clark won 3 & 2 over Wilson H. Flohr. Many architects have left their mark on the layout, from Seth Raynor, Walter Travis, and A. W. Tillinghast to Stephen Kay and, most recently, Mike DeVries. Recent work has included updating greens and bunkers.
