U.S. Open Final Qualifying Tees Off at Old Oaks & Century, Monday
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 3, 2022) – A total of 92 players are slated to tee it up in Purchase, N.Y., on Monday in hopes of advancing to the 122nd U.S. Open Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., through Final Qualifying at Old Oaks Country Club and Century Country Club. The final number of qualifying positions will be announced on Monday morning.

The field contains 57 professionals and 35 amateurs and includes MGA and USGA champions, some of the country’s top collegiate players, club professionals and touring professionals.
Old Oaks and Century stand as one of nine sectional qualifying rounds that will take place across the country on June 6. Final qualifying already took place on May 23 in Dallas, Texas and Japan. The number of qualifying spots for each sectional is determined by the size and strength of the field. Final qualifying conducted by the MGA rotates between the Purchase sites of Old Oaks and Century and Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., every three years, with the exciting day heading back to Canoe Brook in 2023.
Purchase Success
A trio of players in the field have advanced to the U.S. Open through Old Oaks and Century before: Jamie Lovemark (2015), Fran Quinn (2014), and Ricky Barnes (2007). Meanwhile, Matthew Campbell advanced through Canoe Brook Country Club in 2017.
Makings of Another Major?
Met Area professionals Alex Beach of Westchester Country Club, Paul Dickinson of Atlantic Golf Club, Dylan Newman of Brae Burn Country Club and Casey Pyne of Stanwich Club all competed in the PGA Championship at Southern Hills last month and aim to advance to their second major of the season. Shawn Warren of Falmouth Country Club (Maine) was also in the field at Southern Hills.

Local Knowledge
Matthew Lowe’s 2017 Ike victory came at Century, where he fired a 10-under 61 in the final round. He won the 54-hole championship by five shots.
College Standouts
Haskins Award winner and No. 1 ranked men’s player Chris Gotterup headlines those coming off their college seasons. After four years at Rutgers, Gotterup spent his final season at Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to a record-tying seven victories. It's reported that Gotterup will turn pro next week. Gotterup’s teammate Logan McAllister is also in the field, as well as Massachusetts native Michael Thorbjornsen, who earned All-Pac-12 first team honors during his sophomore season at Stanford.

Fran Quinn, 57, of Holden, Mass., and his son, Owen, 23, both advanced from the Williamstown, Mass., local qualifier. They each shot 1-over 72 at Taconic Golf Club on May 17. Fran has played in four U.S. Opens and qualified for each through both stages. Owen caddied for his father, who competes on PGA Tour Champions, in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The Quinns live 45 minutes from The Country Club, the site of this year’s U.S. Open. Owen, who has won three Worcester County Amateurs, played at Lehigh University.
On the National Stage
Many competitors in the field are no stranger to competing on the national stage with the USGA. Several have been highly successful, including 2002 U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes, 2011 U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft, and 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Michael Thorbjornsen. Others include 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up Mark Costanza, and Cody Paladino, a nine-time USGA competitor who finished as the runner-up in the 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Professional Pedigree
Notable professionals in the field include 2021 U.S. Open qualifier Luis Fernando Barco (PGA Tour Latinoamerica); Ricky Barnes, who tied for second in the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black; 2011 Walker Cup team member Kelly Kraft, who forfeited his exemption into the 2012 U.S. Open as U.S. Amateur champion by turning professional following that year’s Masters; PGA Tour Champions competitor Fran Quinn, who owns four Korn Ferry Tour and two Asian Tour victories; and three-time PGA Tour winner Johnson Wagner, who remains as the only player to win all three MGA Majors—Ike, Amateur, Open—in the same season.
