U.S. Amateur Begins at Oakmont

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 9, 2021) -- A total of 312 of the world's best amateurs have descended upon Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., for the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship and the Met Area once again has strong representation.

Three of the MGA's top five players in its current Player of the Year standings are teeing it up this week, as Michael Brown of Maple Shade Township, N.J., Christian Cavaliere of Katonah, N.Y., and Trevor Randolph of Franklin Lakes, N.J., all aim to continue their season's strong play. Though Brown recently missed out on match play at the Met Amateur, the 48-year-old won the NJSGA Amateur and finished fourth in the New Jersey State Open. The 23-year-old Cavaliere's highlight so far this year includes sharing low-amateur honors in the New York State Open, where he finished tied seventh, plus a runner-up finish in the Mittelmark Invitational and a tie for third at the Ike. Randolph, also 48, is coming off a run to the finals of the Met Amateur, and has also had a trio of top-10 finishes in Met Area events this season.

Ethan Ng of New York City secured his spot through medalist honors at the MGA-conducted qualfiier at Wiltwyck. Also advancing from MGA qualifiers were Brett Inserra of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Nolan Forsman of Larchmont, N.Y., from Manhattan Woods; William Parker of Glen Cove, N.Y., and Chris Lambrou of Baldwin, N.Y., from Brookville; and 16-year-old Reed Greyserman of Short Hills, N.J., and Sam Goldenring of Florham Park, N.J., out of Bedens Brook.

Peter Bradbeer recently advanced to match play in the Met Amateur and earned his spot in the field from Seven Oaks Golf Club, while Chris DeJohn of Ridgewood, N.J., punched his ticket out of Wampanoag Country Club.

Also in the field is 2016 MGA Player of the Year Stewart Hagestad, who earlier this year was on his third-consecutive victorious Walker Cup squad. 

Players are taking on Oakmont and Longue View Club in Verona, Pa., for the 36-hole stroke play portion of the championship, with the top 64 finishers advancing to match play. Match play continues at Oakmont for the remainder of the championship, slated to conclude with its 36-hole championship match on Sunday, August 15.
