MGA Team Set for Williamson Cup

Elmsford, N.Y. (August 8, 2023) - The MGA will be well represented at the 58th Williamson Cup, a highly regarded junior event with 10 northeast golf associations. Zach Berger of Remsenburg, N.Y., Zach Munno of Stamford, Conn., Charles Schrohe of Greenwich, Conn., and Nick Smith Jr. of Rye, N.Y., will head to Lookout Point Country Club in Fonthill, Ontario, Canada, August 13-14.

Founded in 1964, the Williamson Cup is a 36-hole stroke play competition. Four juniors represent each association, with the best three scores from each round counting toward the team's oerall score. 

Munno will be making his second Williamson Cup appearance, after representing the MGA in Alexandria, VA., in 2022 and finishing fourth in the indivual comptition. Berger recently competed in the 55th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship. Schrohe is wrapping up his junior career after a great deal of success with the Greenwich High School golf team. Greenwich won the team title at the 2023 state championship, and Schrohe was slected as the FCIAC Player of he Year. Smith placed third in the Met PGA Junior Tour New York City Championship in July. Berger, Munno, and Schrohe recently competed in the Carter Cup at Baltusrol 

The event was established by A. Fred Williamson in memory of his father, one of the original founders of Winged Foot Golf Club and a long-time member of the USGA Executive Committee. The event was first hosted at Winged Foot in 1964, with the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association coming away victorious. The MGA team has a strong history of winning the event, most recently claiming victory in 2015 when the event was contested at Saucon Valley Country Club. The MGA has brought the Williamson Cup home 11 times, second only to the Golf Association of Ontario's 12 victories.

The 2022 MGA team of Munno, Derek Gutierrez, Jack Estrella, and Dylan Gallagher finished second to the Washington Metro Golf Association at Belle Haven Country Club, with all four MGA competitiors placing in the top ten of the individual scoring event.
