ELMSFORD, N.Y. (February 28, 2023) – The Metropolitan Golf Association is excited to approach the 2023 season by introducing the MGA Women’s Player of the Year Award, which will be presented for the first time at year’s end.

The award, established with support from the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association, aims to honor the female amateur from the Met Area that compiles an outstanding performance record during the season.
“The Met Area golf community has a depth of incredible female talent, and opportunities for competitive women’s golf continue to grow both locally and throughout the country,” says MGA executive director Brian R. Mahoney. “We are proud and excited to unveil this award and add it to the MGA’s collection of year-end honors to celebrate the accomplishments of our high-level competitors.”
Much like the MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award and Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway, a season-long points race that includes local, regional, and national events will help determine the recipient, who must be a member of an MGA member club. The award will be presented at the MGA’s Annual Meeting and Dinner in December.
The MGA remains committed to elevating and enhancing opportunities for women in golf at all levels. For competitive players, the MGA has partnered with the WMGA for more than ten years to conduct the Women’s Met Amateur and Women’s Public Links Championships. In 2021, the MGA changed the team structure of the Carey Cup Matches to include four women in the biennial matches against Golf Ireland and in 2022 launched The Farrell, a high-level national invitational co-hosted with The Stanwich Club that features a women’s mid-amateur division.
In preparation for the 2023 season, the MGA has also made updates to the points system for its MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award, increasing point allocations for several of the MGA’s marquee championships including the Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway, the Ike MGA Stroke Play Championship, and the Met Amateur Championship, as well as the WGA and LIGA Open championships. The MGA will continue to evaluate its points list on an annual basis in order to ensure a reliable system that determines the year’s top amateur player.
