The June/July 2020 issue earned First Place in the Publications category, marking the magazine’s fifth such honor in the last nine years. The “Brains vs. Brawn” issue examined great short par-4s in the Met Area, took a look at Winged Foot Golf Club’s major championship history in advance of the 2020 U.S. Open and featured a Club Focus on Somerset Hills Country Club.
Adam Schupak also earned First-Place recognition in Profile Writing for his “Passion Project” story, an Up Close feature on ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and his passion for the game.
Mark Hermann and editor Jeff Neuman earned Outstanding Achiever honors in Business Writing and Travel Writing, respectively. Hermann’s “Who’s Afraid of Virtual Golf?” took a deeper look at playing golf on a simulator whether at facilities such as ZSTRICT in Stamford, Conn., or at a club. Nueman’s “My Heart is in the Highlands” transported readers to the varied golf experiences offered by the upper reaches of Scotland.
The International Network of Golf, a non-profit, media-based networking organization, conducts the awards program for its members. ING membership is open to anyone in the golf industry and media. An independent panel of three judges in each category determines first-Place Winners and Outstanding Achievers.
This year’s awards program featured 49 honorees across 13 categories. Writing honors accounted for 36 of the awards in eight categories.
Judges use a point system with several criteria. Scoring is done by judges when possible without knowledge of the person responsible for the work, or of the other judges in the category. The number of Outstanding Achievers in a category is determined by total entries and scoring range in the category.
