Match Play Brackets Set for the Weekend at The Farrell

GREENWICH, Conn. (September 27, 2024) – Match play is set for the men’s, women's, and men’s senior divisions at the third playing of The Farrell at The Stanwich Club after 18 holes of stroke play qualifying.

Catherine McEvoy of Innis Arden, who won the inaugural The Farrell in 2022, earned medalist honors in the women’s mid-amateur division after carding a 2-under par 70. Jim Strickland of Whisper Rock also finished at 2-under par to lead the senior division, while Christian Cavaliere of Hudson National and William Davenport from Pine Tree shared the low score in the men’s mid-amateur division at 3-under par. 

McEvoy paired five birdies with three bogeys on her way to a 2-under par round. The 26-year-old closed her round with birdies on the par-4 13th and par-5 17th. Jacqueline Setas of The Golf Club of Tennessee finished second in the women’s division, firing an even-par 72. Cavaliere started his day with a bogey on No. 1 but then carded four birdies and didn’t drop a shot over his 17 remaining holes. Three of those four birdies came on the back nine. Davenport was 2-under par at the turn and pushed it to 4-under after a birdie on No. 14, but gave one back on the par-4 15th before paring his final three holes. 

Mark Costanza of Baltusrol and Blanton Farmer from Sara Bay were the two other golfers under par in the men’s mid-am division and finished at 1-under par to share third place. Costanza birdied Nos. 14 and 17 to return to red figures after double-bogeying No. 13. Farmer was 2-over after four before getting both shots back with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7. Three birdies and two bogeys followed on the back nine for Farmer. 

Strickland, who finished in a tie for second last year, carded four birdies and two bogeys. After bogeying No. 11, Strickland birdied the par-4 12th and the par-3 16th. Ronan Culligan of Saucon Valley was second at even par, followed by a 2-over par trio featuring Ken Dardis of Stanwich, Patrick Pierson of Hollow Brook, and Dave Mooradian of The Country Club of Troy. 

Two divisions needed playoffs featuring more than three players to determine the 16 spots ifor match play; in the men’s mid-amateur division, there was a 7-for-1 playoff at 4-over; in the women’s mid-amateur division, there was a 7-for-4 playoff at 6-over to finish the bracket. The senior division featured a two-man playoff for the final spot. 

Richard Dowling of the Golf Performance Center was the only competitor to birdie the par-4 first and advance to Saturday in the men's division, while Nikki Powers of Aspetuck Valley, Ket Vanderpool of Pinetree, Mimi McAndrew of Piping Rock, and Charlotte Daughan of MGA eClub - Connecticut only needed one hole to advance through the playoff in the women’s division. 

Match play begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday off No. 1, with Cavaliere taking on Dowling in the men's mid-amateur division. The men’s senior division begins at 8:15 a.m. off No. 10 with Strickland facing Robert Beck of Lehigh. The first women’s mid-amateur division match is McEvoy meeting Daughan at 8:42 a.m. off No. 1.
