Lowe Holds Off Stauderman, Jeter To Win Public Links
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (June 22, 2023) - 2022 Long Island Golf Association Player of the Year Matthew Lowe of Bethpage State Park comes out on top for the 75th MGA Public Links Championship. Lowe finished the day at 2-under par through 36 holes on his home course.
In the windy morning round, Lowe was able to quickly secure his place at the top of the leaderboard after a round consisting of five birdies. He was the only player under par in the morning.
“The morning I feel like I left a lot out there. It was a very good ball striking round," Lowe said.
In the afternoon round, Lowe felt the pressure from Erik Stauderman of Casperkill Golf Club. Stauderman, who shot a 72 in the morning round, fought hard the entire afternoon, carding a 2-under 68. Lowe's lead was down to one stroke on the final hole, however, a long birdie putt secured the win.
“I definitely enjoy earning it more than being handed it, and I definitely had to earn it today. Jeter with a 67 and Erik ended up shooting 68, the whole time he kept putting it on me," Lowe said. "He was so relentless in his pursuit, it was a lot of fun.”
Lowe has had a great deal of success in the Met section, with a notable record-setting win in the 2017 Ike Championship at Century Club.
“I’ve had some good events, but it’s been difficult for me to get the next win, it’s been frustrating at times, but I’m happy that the Pub Links is the one that I was able to get," Lowe explained.
Stauderman finished as runner up with a total score of even-par 140, and 2018 and 2021 MGA Public Links Champion Jonathan Jeter of Nassau Players Club finished in third with a score of 1-over 141.
