Live From: 124th U.S. Open Final Qualifying
SUMMIT, N.J. (June 3, 2024) -- Despite opening with a double-bogey on Monday, Meadow Brook head professional Matt Dobyns bounced back by tallying 10 birdies on Canoe Brook Country Club's North Course to fire 7-under 65 and take the morning lead at final qualifying for the 124th U.S. Open Championship. The top four finishers earn a spot at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the June 13-16 championship.

The North Course -- typically the higher scoring between the North and South courses at Canoe Brook -- yielded the morning's four low scores, with amateur Ben James of Milford, Conn., Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y., and Australian Harrison Crowe all turning in 5-under 67s.
After starting on the par-4 10th, Dobyns converted five birdies on his opening nine to go with a his double, one bogey and two pars. On his final nine, he kept the birdies going and eliminated the miscues, adding five more circles on his card on Nos. 2, 4-6, and 8.
Crowe had a clean card, converting an eagle on the par-5 second as well as three birdies. Miller eagled the second as well and tallied just one bogey on his round, the same as James.
Five-time U.S. Open competitor and three-time Met Open champion Andy Svoboda shot 4-under 68 on the North Course.
Meanwhile, Peter Bradbeer of Rosemont, Pa., turned in the low score on the South Course, shooting 4-under 66 on the shorter of the two layouts.
Overall, 17 players tallied sub-par scores in the morning, leaving many in the mix to make an afternoon run up the leaderboard. Those within reach include another five-time U.S. Open competitor in Jim Herman of Cincinnati, Ohio, PGA TOUR player Max Greyserman of Short Hills, N.J., and four-time MGA champion Luke Sample of New York, N.Y.
Canoe Brook is one of 10 sites that host final qualifying on Monday. Nine take place across the United States with one contested in Canada. Final qualifying already took place in Japan; England; and Dallas, Texas on May 20, with PGA TOUR player Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., advancing from Dallas. The number of qualifying spots for each final qualifier is determined by the size and strength of the field.
