Remembering Yogi Berra
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 23, 2015) - Yogi Berra will not only be rembered for his legendary baseball career, but also for his passion for the game of golf. A longtime member at Montclair Golf Club, Yogi discovered a way to give back through the game and started the Yogi Berra Celebrity Golf Classic, held annually at Montclair since 1990. Over the years, the event has raised millions of dollars to support educational programs at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Little Falls, N.J., scholarship funding for inner-city youth, summer camps, and the Carmen and Yogi Berra Endowment Fund for scouts with special needs.
In 2005, Yogi Berra was honored by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association and was awarded the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award for his work with the Celebrity Golf Classic. This award is anually presented to an individual or organization that promotes and supports the game of golf through commercial sponsorships of quality events. Yogi and his involvement with the Celebrity Golf Classic was the perfect fit for this award.
That same year, Adam Schupak sat down with the Hall of Famer for an "Up Close" feature in The Met Golfer.
The game of golf will truly miss the baseball great.
