USA Looking to Retain Walker Cup this Weekend
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (Septemer 10, 2015) – Just two years ago, the United States claimed victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup at National Golf Links in Southampton, N.Y. Though play returns to home turf for the GB&I team this weekend at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England, the U.S. squad is looking for a repeat performance to retain the cup.

In 2013, the Match returned to Long Island and the site of its inaugural competition, with the U.S. taking a decisive 17-9 win. Coincidentally, it was the team’s largest margin of victory since another runaway win in the Met Area, an 18-6 final tally at Quaker Ridge in 1997.
The 45th Walker Cup Match takes place Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13. Four foursomes matches (alternate shot) and eight single matches take place on the first day of competition, while the final day concludes with four foursomes matches, followed by 10 singles matches. All matches are 18 holes, with one point being awarded to the winning team. If a match stands all-square through 18 holes, each team is awarded a half point. If the overall match results in a tie, the reigning champions retain the cup.
The first Walker Cup Match took place in 1922, with the USA winning 8-4. The USA leads the series by a resounding 35-8-1 margin, but since 1989 the USA holds just a 7-6 advantage.
