Met Area Represented in U.S. Senior Amateur

UPDATE (September 29, 2015 - 12 p.m.) - The run for Met Area players in the 59th U.S. Senior Amateur at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., has come to an end, as both George Zahringer and Thomas Hyland were defeated in their Round of 32 matches.

Zahringer's opponent Gary Robinson took a 4-up lead through six holes of play, winning three holes with birdies in the early going. A birdie on the eighth earned Zahringer his first win of the day to trim into the deficit. After four-straight halves, Zahringer claimed the 13th with a par. Robinson then won the par-4 16th with a four to earn the 3&2 win.

Meanwhile, Hyland's opponent Don DuBois opened up with a similar run, carding four birdies in the first seven holes for a 5-up advantage, before claiming the win by a 7&6 margin.

UPDATE (September 29, 2015 - 7:00 a.m.) - George Zahringer of New York City and Thomas Hyland of Marlton, N.J. continue match play at the 59th U.S. Senior Amateur on Tuesday, following their wins in the Round of 64 on Monday.

Zahringer faced David Szewczul of Farmington, Conn., 2&1. Szewczul won the opening hole, but four wins for Zahringer between the eighth and 14th holes earned the 2002 U.S. Mid-Am champion a 3-up lead. Szewczul won both the 15th and 16th, but Zahringer closed out the match with a birdie win on the par-5 17th.

Hyland took a commanding lead with four wins in the first seven holes. His opponent Mills Brown won Nos. 8 and 13, but Hyland answered each time with a win on the following hole. A halve on the 15th earned Hyland the 4&3 victory.

Two matches are scheduled for Tuesday, as play continues at Hidden Creek Golf Club.

Zahringer faces Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. at 8:15 a.m., while Hyland squares off against Don DuBois of Newport Beach, Calif., who finished third in stroke play qualifying, at 9:15 a.m.

UPDATE (September 28, 2015) - Three Met Area players have advanced to the match play portion of the 59th U.S. Senior Amateur at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

David Szewczul of Farmington, Conn., Thomas Hyland of Marlton, N.J., and George Zahringer of New York City all advanced by finishing in the top 64 following 36 holes of stroke play.

Szewczul and Hyland recorded matching rounds of 74 and 73 for a two-day total of 147, tying for 24th.

Zahringer opened with a first round 77, but bounced back on day two with an even-par 71 to finish at 148 in a tie for 31st.

Match play begins at 8:10 a.m. on Monday. The 10:10 a.m. match will certainly be one to watch, as the highly accomplished Szewczul and Zahringer will square off in the opening round.

Hyland's match begins at 12:20 p.m. against Mills Brown of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Two rounds of match play are scheduled for both Tuesday and Wednesday, with a champion being crowned after the 18-hole final on Thursday.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 23, 2015) – Some of the Met Area’s best senior players will soon compete on a national level, but they won’t have to go very far to do so as the 59th U.S. Senior Amateur will take place at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Sept. 26 – Oct. 1.

Ken Bakst of New York City is one of 15 USGA individual champions in the field, earning an exemption based on his 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur title.  This is Bakst’s second USGA championship this summer, having competed in the Four-Ball in early May. He also competed in this year’s British Seniors Amateur at Royal County Down.

The MGA’s 10-time Player of the Year George Zahringer is also in the field, seeking further national success. The New York City native won the 2002 U.S. Mid-Am, and claimed the 2013 British Seniors Amateur. In early May, Zahringer kicked off another golf season with victory, claiming his record 16th MGA title at the Senior Amateur.

Zahringer qualified at Garden City Country Club in Garden City, N.Y., as did David Prowler of Manhassett, N.Y., Thomas Hyland of Marlton, N.J. and 2014 MGA Senior Open winner Adam Kugler of Closter, N.J.

Several more Met Area players qualified at Ridgewood in Danbury, Conn., led by medalist Daniel Russo of Hageman, N.Y. Shawn McLoughlin of Newtown, Conn., the highly accomplished David Szewczul of Farmington, Conn., and Matthew Corrigan of Neponsit, N.Y. also advanced out of Ridgewood.

John O'Malley of Forsgate also qualified, making the field at White Manor in Malvern, Pa.

The U.S. Senior Amateur is open to amateurs that have turned 55 by Sept. 26, and also have a Handicap Index of 7.4 or less.

Hidden Creek opened in 2002 and was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It features subtly contoured green complexes and will serve as a strong test for the nation’s most seasoned amateurs. The course will be set up at 6,864 yards and play to a par of 71 (36-35).

The field of 156 players will compete in two rounds of stroke play and the low 64 scorers advance to match play. Match play is slated from Sept. 28 until Oct. 1 when a champion will be crowned.

Tickets are not required and spectators are encouraged to attend the event.
