David Pastore Medals at U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Paramount

NEW CITY, N.Y. (May 7, 2014) - Five spots were available today at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying Round at Paramount Country Club in New City, N.Y.

Amateur David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., took home medalist honors after shooting the only sub-par round of the day with a 1-under 69. Pastore has been a force at MGA tournaments since he was a junior, winning two Met Juniors and the 2010 Carter Cup. He is currently a senior at the University of Virginia. This is Pastore’s first time at advancing to the Sectional Qualifying Round, and tonight he is making the drive back to UVA to finish his final exams.

Bradford Tilley of Jupiter, Fla., another UVA grad, fired an even-par 70 to qualify. He grew up in nearby Chappaqua, N.Y. and has played on the PGA TOUR Canada. Qualifying with scores of 1-over 71 was 2012 Met Open Champ Daniel Balin of Rockville, Md., the Assistant Professional at Burning Tree Country Club, and amateur Jackie Barnes of Stormvile, N.Y. Balin played in the 2013 PGA Championship and is playing on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica this season

After three players finished at 2-over 72, it was decided in a playoff that Paramount’s own Head Professional Steve Scott of New City, N.Y., would take the final qualifying spot. Scott has an impressive golf resume, playing in the 1996 U.S. Open and 1997 Masters as an amateur. He’s also been on two Walker Cup teams, and famously was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in the final match of the 1996 U.S. Amateur. This is Scott’s second consecutive year advancing to the sectional level.

David Schuster of New York, N.Y. is the first alternate and Jeb Buchanan of Loudonville, N.Y. is the second alternate.

Paramount played to a par 70 at 6,665 yards through calm conditions. The course was a terrific backdrop to today’s qualifier, and challenged the talented players. Two more Local Qualifying Rounds will be conducted by the MGA before the MGA holds a Sectional Qualifying Round at Old Oaks and Century Country Clubs on June 2, one of ten played throughout the country to determine the final field for the 114th U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club on June 9 – 15.
