Mike Miller captures New York State Open at Bethpage Black
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 24, 2014) - Two-time MGA Player of the Year Mike Miller of Knollwood won the Lenox Advisers New York State Open Championship today at Bethpage Black with a 54-hole total of 8-under 205. This is Miller's first win as a professional and he earned it in style, firing rounds of 69, 71, and a 65 in the third round to secure the victory. The 22-year-old from Brewster, N.Y., got into the field on a sponsor's exemption and took full advantage, winning the tournament by four shots.
While Miller made the win look easy, it certainly wasn't. The field for this event was a strong one and it included the winner of the past two NY State Opens, Danny Balin of Burning Tree, who was tied with Miller for second at the end of the first round but ended up finishing tied for 39th. Another two-time NY State Open Champion, Rob Labritz of GlenArbor, was on Miller's heels throughout the event. Labritz matched Miller's opening rounds of 69 and 71, but his final round 1-under 70 would not be enough to catch Miller and he finished alone in third.
Closest to Miller and finishing in solo second was Adam Fuchs of Bethpage State Park. Fuchs carded rounds of 71, 67, and 71 for a 54-hole total of 209. Former Carter Cup champion Chris DeForest of Roundout jumped out to the first round lead after a 3-under 68 and then rounds of 73 and 70 placed him at tied for fourth.
