46th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship Underway at Rumson
RUMSON, N.J. (August 7, 2014) - The first round of matches are complete at the 46th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship at Rumson Country Club and the final eight players are heading back on the course to begin their second round.
Advancing to the final eight in dominating fashion was Ethan Ng of New York, N.Y. Ng won his first match 8 & 7 over Bobby Mulcahy of Gladstone, N.J. Ng got off to a hot start, making birdies on the first two holes and going 2-up. He would never give up the lead again and did not lose a hole. In the second round Ng will take on Andrew Purse of Greenwich, Conn., who beat Matthew Lee-Tolley of New York, N.Y. 1-up in an excellent match. Purse had a 3-up lead on the 12th hole and Lee-Tolley fought all the way back to get it to only 1-up on 17. They then halved the 18th hole, giving Purse the close win.
The match between 13-year-olds Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y. and James Pak of Glen Rock, N.J. went all the way to the 17th hole, where Han would end it with a par to win 3 & 1. Han will face Rumson Junior Club Champion Christopher Gotterup of Little Silver, N.J., who won his opening round match 3 & 2 over Michael Glatstein of White Plains, N.Y.
Brent Ito of Ardsley, N.Y. will be moving on to the final eight after winning his opening round match over Thomas Corrigan of Irvington, N.Y., 6 & 5. Ito will face Bobby Weise of Freehold, N.J., who needed 20 holes to win his first match 1-up over Andre H. Chi of Huntington, N.Y. The last match in the second round will be between Erik Stauderman of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and Michael Brennan Jr. of Oyster Bay, N.Y. Stauderman beat Christian Oakley of Southampton, N.Y. 3 & 2, while Brennan Jr. defeated Michael Purcell of Nutley, N.J. 1-up on the 1st playoff hole.
