Team Russo of Smithtown Landing wins MGA/MetLife Men's Net Team Championship
ROSLYN HARBOR, N.Y. (June 20, 2013) – Franco Russo and Joe Russo represented Smithtown Landing in the 37th MGA/MetLife Men’s Net Team Championship and led the field with a net score of 11-under par 60. The father and son duo conquered Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, N.Y., to win their first MGA Championship. The team credited their success to the practice round they played in to learn the course layout prior to the championship.
“The greens were the toughest part of the course today,” Franco claimed, adding that they played extremely fast.
Patrick Cowan and Matthew Maxwell of Huntington Crescent claimed second place when they put together a net score of 8-under 63. Right behind them with scores of 7-under 64 were Brian Shea and Joe Shannon of Ridgewood, John Carroll and Steve Walker of Bethpage, Kevin Kelley and John Donnelly of Shamrock, and Steve Haggerty and Luder Celestin of the Met Restaurant Club.
Engineers Country Club, which is known for its difficult greens that challenge all golfers, provided an excellent setting for today’s championship. The course layout played to par 37-36-73 and measured a total of 6,669 yards.
The MGA/MetLife Men’s Net Team Championship has a strong history dating back to 1977 and is designed to give the average golfer a competitive tournament experience. The championship has grown in popularity and now requires the two-man teams to qualify at the club level before sectional qualifying to earn a place in the final field.
