Bernstein, Wall lead after one round of 11th Carter Cup
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (July 31, 2013) – The MGA’s 11th Carter Cup is underway at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. and the Met Area’s top junior players are through their first round in this 36-hole Junior Stroke Play Championship. The first half of play was conducted on Baltusrol’s Upper Course, which played as a par 71 (35-36) to 6,921 yards.
The leaders with the only two under par rounds of the morning were Jeremy Wall of Brielle, N.J. and Will Bernstein of New York, N.Y. Both players shot 1-under 70s, putting them in the lead by one stroke. Just a stroke behind them is the defending champion Jared Mactas of Woodcliff Lake, N.J. after shooting an even par 71.
Current Ridgewood Club Champion Ryan Rose of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. fired an impressive 1-over 72 for his morning round. Rose felt he played pretty well and said he really focused on the difficult Upper Course greens.
“The greens are so crazy on those first few holes on the Upper,” Rose said. “I was just focusing on leaving it in good spots, getting it in the fairway and just trying to leave it below the hole.”
Former MGA Boys Champ Willis Huynh of Syosset, N.Y. also shot a 1-over 72, tying Rose for fourth through the first round. For the afternoon, Huynh is hoping to just go out and have fun.
“There is nothing to it. Golf is a game, nothing to get to serious about,” he said.
Cody Cox of Milford, Pa. and Ethan Wall of Brielle, N.J. also shot 1-over 72s and are tied for fourth.
