Mielke Leads All Midway Through Round 1 of Senior Open
SCARSDALE, N.Y. (August 26, 2013) – Tranquil weather and beautiful course conditions at Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale, N.Y., offered up ideal scoring opportunities for the first wave of players in the 17th MGA Senior Open.
Fourteen of out the 54 players who teed it up in the morning were able to shoot under par, led by two-time Met Open champion (’92 and ’08) Mark Mielke of Mill River, who fired a bogey-free 6-under 65. His fantastic front-nine 31 included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 7th.
“I drove the ball real well, didn’t get in any trouble,” Mielke said. “I knocked it on a couple of the par 5s in two, and made one of them.
“The golf course is awesome. The greens are putting as true as you could imagine, nice and smooth. It was in great shape and a lot of fun.”
Ed Whitman of Knickerbocker, Bobby Heins of Old Oaks and Tom Sutter of Dunwoodie all came in with 3-under 68s to share second.
