Bernstein Leads After First Round of Stroke Play at Met Amateur

GREENWICH, CONN. (August 1, 2013) – The 111th Met Amateur Championship at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. is underway and players have completed their first round. A few competitors got off to hot starts, but a steady rainfall beginning shortly before 11 a.m. provided a much more difficult back nine for the field of 59 players. The top 16 after 36 holes of play will move on to the match play portion of the tournament.

Yale senior Sam Bernstein of Century is the leader after the first 18 holes, shooting a 2-under 70. Bernstein played a solid even-par front nine and had a stellar finish on his back nine, highlighted by three birdies and an eagle. Bernstein looks to be in good shape to qualify for the match play stage for the third straight year.

Behind Bernstein at 1-under 71 are a pair of St. John’s teammates, Pat Wilson of Panther Valley and defending champ Ryan McCormick of Suburban. Also shooting 1-under 71 was Derrick Kim of Rolling Green.

A host of players are in good shape at even par 72, including another member of the Red Storm golf team Dylan Crowley of Glen Cove. Also at even is last year’s runner-up Matt Mattare of Bethpage, Peter Ballo of Woodway and John Jackopsic of MGA eClub – West/Fairfield.
