Tony Wimpfheimer To Receive Winnie Palmer Award

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (May 13, 2012) - People who volunteer their time and energy to golf do so for the love of the game and not for any awards or special recognition. However, there are times when the golf community can and should honor special individuals whose efforts go above and beyond. The Met Area is lucky to have many people who fall into that category, and one of them, C.A. "Tony" Wimpfheimer, has been chosen by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association as the recipient of the Winnie Palmer Award. Wimpfheimer will be presented with the award at this year's MGWA National Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 19 at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, N.Y.

Wimpfheimer, 84, joins an impressive list of people who have received the Winnie Palmer Award, including: Barbara Nicklaus, Dolores Hope, Vivienne Player, Donald “Doc” Giffin, and Msgr. Tom Hartman & Rabbi Marc Gelman (of the so-called "God Squad" on Long Island). The Winnie Palmer Award recognizes an individual who has consistently given their time, energy and enthusiasm to those less fortunate. It is named in honor of Winnie Palmer, Arnold's wife, who devoted much of her life to charity work for literacy programs and health care.

Few individuals have worked harder for golf or are more deserving of this honor than Charles Anthony “Tony” Wimpfheimer. A member of no fewer than three Metropolitan Golf Association committees throughout the past 35 years, Wimpfheimer received the MGA's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 1996. Born in New York City, he received his undergraduate education from Williams College and served as a captain in the Air Force. Following his tour, he became a member of Sunningdale Country Club in Scardsdale, N.Y. and has served on their Board of Governors since 1953. An editor by profession, Wimfheimer became vice president and managing editor of Random House, before becoming one of the major players behind the creation and development of the MGA's official magazine, The Met Golfer. He has seen it grow from a fledgling publication in 1983 into the nation's top association magazine as it stands today. He currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Met Golfer Editorial Committee, and continues to play an active part in the magazine's mission.

In addition, Wimpfheimer has served on the MGA Tournament Committee, the MGA Executive Committee, as president of the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association, and was one of the founding members on the MGA Foundation's Board of Directors. He is widely recognized as one of Met Area golf's most influential people and one of its most effective fundraisers.

For more than three decades, Tony Wimpfheimer has given the Met Area boundless energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to his tireless efforts, golf on all levels is better off. He is most deserving of the Winnie Palmer Award.
