Kavanagh Captures Title at 15th WMGA/MGA Public Links Championship
FLANDERS, N.J. (July 11, 2012) - Kelsi Kavanagh of MGA eClub - New Jersey took home the trophy today as her score of 6-over 78 marked her as the winner at the 15th WMGA/MGA Women’s Public Links Championship, held this year at Flanders Valley Golf Course in Flanders, N.J. Kavanagh, a rising senior at Monmouth University, carded three birdies in her round to secure her victory and edge out two-time champion Daria Cummings of Centennial.
Kavanagh claimed that she played short today, getting herself into some trouble spots, but was able to play well overall. Hard to believe by her performance today, Kavanagh just took two weeks off from practicing after having surgery to remove her wisdom teeth. She is headed back out to the course to practice for her next event, the NJSGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Crestmont Country Club in West Orange, N.J., which begins at the end of the month.
Cummings, today’s runner-up, took home the Women’s Public Links title in 2008 and 2006. She finished today at 7-over 79, just one stroke behind Kavanagh. Cummings recently tied for 23rd in the WMGA/MGA Women’s Met Amateur Championship at Stanwich in June.
Finishing tied for 3rd today with scores of 8-over 80 were Hae Jeong Son of MGA eClub-Hudson Valley, Mayouko Abe of Marine Park, and Miki Melzer of Pinch Brook.
Today’s 18-hole stroke play event marked the 15th year of the Women’s Public Links Championship, jointly run by the WMGA and the MGA. The event is open to all female golfers who reside in the WMGA/MGA district, have an official USGA Handicap Index of 20.0 or lower, and do not hold playing privileges at a course from which the general public is excluded.
This was the first time ever that the MGA held a championship at Flanders Valley Golf Course, and the course's White/Blue nines provided for an excellent day of competitive golf. For full results from the 15th WMGA/MGA Women's Public Links Championship, click here.
