Two Long Island Amateurs Fail to Make Cut at U.S. Women's Open

UPDATED July 6, 2012 - As the second round of the U.S. Women's Open came to a close today, Shon and Park faced disapointment as the two Met locals did not end up making it through to the final rounds. The cut was made at 5-over 149 for the first two rounds, leaving the Long Island women a few too many strokes back. Shon finished at 78-77-155 making her 11-over, and Park completed her Women's Open debut with a score of 81-84-165. Whatever the numbers, it is still one impressive feat for Shon and Park to have made it through qualifying to play at the U.S. Women's Open, especially at the young ages of 20 and 17.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 2, 2012)Annie Park, 17, of Levittown and Kelly Shon, 20, of Port Washington will tee off just eleven minutes apart in the first two tee-times of the U.S. Women’s Open early on Thursday morning at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisc. Park and Shon made it through Sectional Qualifying to earn their spots in the field of 156, including a total of 28 amateurs, contending for the title on July 5-8.

Park made headlines throughout May for becoming the first girl to win the Nassau High School Boys Championship. Eligible to play in the boys tournament due to the fact that her district does not currently have a girls team, Park made the record book with her six stroke win at Bethpage State Park. Only about a week before, Park took medalist honors at the U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier at Trump National Golf Club in Colt’s Neck, N.J. Park went on to reach the quarterfinals in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship last month.

Shon, a rising junior at Princeton University who has three AJGA wins under her belt, battled through illnesses this spring but was still able to pull off a T7 finish at the Ivy League Championship in late April. Shon contracted gastroenteritis and struggled with allergies this spring, but despite not feeling one hundred percent, reached the round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Am Public Links Championship at Neshanic Valley Golf Course and secured one of seven qualifying spots for the Open at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Complete groupings and starting times are available on the USGA website, and live scoring will be offered starting on Thursday.
