Bensel and Morris Win Third Senior-Junior Championship
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (January 22, 2012) - 2007 Met Open Champion and accomplished Met Area professional Frank Bensel joined familiar partner Kevin Morris of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in winning the duo's third title at the PGA Winter Championships Senior-Junior Team Championship.
Bensel, 43, birdied five of his first six holes Thursday enroute to the unprecedented victory. Playing the Ryder Course at The PGA Golf Club, Bensel and Morris, 60, finished the day at 11-under-par 61 and for a total of 28-under-par 260 on three courses over four days to win by a stroke.
“We know it was a course where you could go low,” said Morris, who retired four years ago after 30 years at Westchester Hills Golf Club in White Plains, N.Y. “You just have to keep playing hard all day.” Morris birdied the last two holes as they made up five strokes the final round, finishing nearly an hour ahead of the third day’s leaders.
The Senior-Junior Team Championship became a pick-your-partner event in 2005 and this year featured 148 teams competing on the Ryder, Dye and Wanamaker courses at The PGA Golf Club. Bensel and Morris previously won the event in 2006 and 2008. Bensel, who works as the assistant professional at Century Country Club in Purchase, N .Y., and spends his winters in Jupiter, Fla, also won the PGA Match Play Championship in 2004.
Other recent victories for Bensel include Met Area championships such as the 2011 and 2009 CSGA Open, the 2010 Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship and the 2010 PGA Stroke Play Championship.
