Karen Chung Was Defeated in the Round of 32 at U.S. Women's Am

Updated 4:30 p.m. (August 9, 2012) - Despite handling her first-round match very well, Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J. dropped her round of 32 match 1-up to Celine Boutier of France. At just 16 years-old, Chung should see this as a very positive finish. For Chung, it is a matter of time before she wins big. Her summer has been highlighted by great finishes at both the U.S. Women's Amateur and U.S. Girl's Junior.

Updated 5:00 p.m. (August 8, 2012) - Karen Chung defeated her opponent 4 & 3 to advance to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. Chung lost the first hole of her match, but fired back with a birdie to win the second hole. Her opponent, Brooke Henderson, was not able to catch up to Chung as Chung held the lead throughout the rest of the match. The 16-year-old birdied the 15th hole, securing her the victory 4 & 3. Harin Lee fell 6 & 5 in her match today, and Kelly Shon will not be advancing as she lost her match 3 & 2.

Chung will face Celine Boutier of France in the Round of 32 tomorrow, they tee off at 9:00 a.m. For a recap of today's match play action, visit the U.S. Women's Amateur website.

Updated 9:00 a.m. (August 8, 2012) - All three Met Area locals - Shon, Lee, and Chung - survived through the two rounds of qualifying stroke play and advanced to the first round of match play. Shon finished her round yesterday coming in at even par, and her qualifying score of 70-72-142 earned her a T-12 finish in stroke play. Lee finished her second round at 2-over par, but her total score of 3-over 147 kept her above the cut line. Chung was also able to advance to match play, she finished the qualifying rounds at 4-over 148, one stroke ahead of the cut line.

Updated 9:30 a.m. (August 7, 2012) - Kelly Shon finished her first round of the U.S. Women's Amateur 2-under par 70 and is tied for fourth place going into today's second round of stroke play. Shon recorded six birdies on the 6,512 yard track to have her name at the top of the leaderboard. Harin Lee finished yesterday at 1-over 73 and is T-32. Lee was 1-under par on the front nine but struggled to stay on track on the back nine. Karen Chung carded two birdies during her early morning round on Monday and came into the clubhouse at 3-over 75. Based on their performances today, these three Met Area players will have the opportunity to advance to match play.

Today is the second and final round of stroke play, and the cut will be made after compeltion of play today. The low 64 scorers will move on to match play starting tomorrow. Live scoring is available on the U.S. Women's Amateur website.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 6, 2012) - Three Met Area women are playing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship this week at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, with hopes of capturing the esteemed Cox Trophy and adding their name to USGA records. As members of the 156-player starting field, Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., and Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., will compete in two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday to attempt to be in the top 64 scorers advancing to match play.

Shon, 20, a rising junior at Princeton Unviersity, has three AJGA wins under belt and recently competed in the U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run in July. She also reached the round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in New Jersey earlier this summer, and pulled off a T7 finish at the Ivy League Championship in April.

Chung, a 16-year-old and recent Golfweek Player of the Week, won the AJGA Thunderbird Invitational by six shots in Arizona and finished as runner-up at the 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champions. She also won the AJGA Girls Championship in 2011 and 2010.  Chung finished as runner-up in the 2008 U.S. Girls Junior to 17-year-old and now professional Lexi Thompson, and is hoping to add another victory to her already accomplished list this week.

Lee, who will also be a junior at St. John’s University, was selected this spring for the 2012 All-Big East women’s team and qualified for the Women’s Amateur at Somerset Hills Country Club with an impressive score of 74. After attempting to qualify for the event two other times, Lee finally was able to make it into the championship this year.
