Park Defeated in U.S. Public Links Semifinals
JULY 1, 2011 -- After eliminating stroke play medalist Cheyenne Woods in the quarterfinals, 16-year-old Annie Park (left) of Levittown, N.Y., was defeated, 2 & 1, by Brianna Do in the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Public Links Championships at Bandon Dunes Resort in Bandon, Oregon. Park never led in the match, though did close it to all square with five holes remaining before Do won two of the next three holes to seal the victory.
The U.S. Public Links and U.S. Women's Public Links Championships began on Monday, June 27 at Bandon Dunes Resort in Bandon, Oregon and were held concurrently on the Old Macdonald and Bandon Trails courses at the 72-hole resort. Each championship conducted 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, and the top 64 finishers advanced to match play, finishing with a 36-hole final on Saturday, July 2.
The mens' championship saw three Met Area players reach match play, highlighted by 19-year-old Alex Edfort of Somerset, N.J. Edfort, a semifinalist at the 2010 Met Amateur at Quaker Ridge, won two matches but was then defeated in the Round of 16, losing to Derek Ernst of Clovis, California, by a 4 & 3 margin. Edfort did earn 100 Polo Golf MGA Player of the Year points for his performance, which vaults him into the top 10 in the Polo Golf MGA Player of the Year Standings.
The other Met Area locals to reach match play, Alex Williams of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., and reigning U.S. Junior champion Jim Liu, 15, of Smithtown, N.Y., were defeated in the second and first rounds, respectively.
On the women's side, Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., lost 1-up to Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., in the Round of 32. The third match play qualifier, Kelly Shon of Port Washington, N.Y., lost in the first round.
