Humphrey Races to 18-hole lead at Carter Cup

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (August 3, 2011) – Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, Conn., raced to the first-round lead of the 9th Carter Cup at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., with a three-under-par 69. Humphrey, 15, played consistent golf for the first 15 holes and accentuated his round by holing out for eagle on the par-4 16th from 143 yards, and followed that up with a birdie on the par-5 17th.

“For my second shot into 16, I played a slight fade with the pitching wedge,” said Humphrey. “As I watched it, I yelled ‘GO,’ thinking it would be a little short. It hopped up and starting tracking towards the hole where it came to rest right on the lip. I put my head down thinking I had missed out [on the ball going in] but heard my dad yell that it went in.”

This morning’s round took place on Baltusrol’s Upper Course, and the firm-and-fast conditions proved a challenge for these accomplished young golfers from around the Met Area with nearly all competitors finishing at, or above par.

Former MGA/MetLife MGA Boys Champion (2009), Mark Reilly, of Babylon, N.Y., was the only other player to shoot par or better this morning, shooting an even-par 71. Cameron Young, the 2011 WGA Amateur winner from Scarborough, N.Y., came in just behind Reilly with a one-over 72. Ethan Wall of Brielle, N.J., Harrison Shih of Saddle River, N.J., Max Christiana of White Plains, N.Y., and Stephen Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., all posted solid rounds of two-over-par 73, while Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., shot three-over-par 74.

This year’s Met Junior Champion, Charles Edler of Fair Haven, N.J., shot 6-over 77, as did Glen Cove, N.Y., native Dylan Crowley, who finished as the runner-up to Edler at the Met Junior.

The MGA will continue to provide live scoring during the second round of the 36-hole championship, taking place at Baltusrol’s Lower Course this afternoon.
