MGA Begins Season With Senior Net Four-Bal
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (April 28, 2010) — The 2010 MGA championship season officially begins with the 18th MGA Senior Net Four-Ball Tournament on Monday, May 3, at Scarsdale Golf Club in Hartsdale, N.Y. Last year, Terrence Fitzpatrick teamed with fellow Packanack (Wayne, N.J.) member Steve Dalane to take the title. This year, Fitzpatrick looks to repeat with a new partner, Randy Biagini, also of Packanack. They will lead a competitive field of 100 teams, including 2008 champion Frank Hendricks of Sterling Farms Golf Course in Stamford, Conn., and his partner Lou Argenio of the Hubbard Heights Men’s Club.
The MGA Senior Net Four-Ball always attracts a talented and enthusiastic field of players, with many looking for their first shot at MGA glory. Mark Cohen and Denis O’Leary will represent Scarsdale Golf Club in the championship, although not on the same team. Both players are intimately familiar with the Scarsdale layout and will use this knowledge to their advantage as they navigate the course.
The original A.W. Tillinghast design remained until the early 1960s, when Geoffrey Cornish was brought in to do an extensive renovation. Although none of the original holes remain today, one in particular had a storied existence—a long, uphill par three over the lake in front of the clubhouse. In its day, the hole was recognized as one of the great par threes in the Met Area.
The Wilson Cup, played annually at Scarsdale, has been one of the Met Area’s top amateur team competitions since its inception in 1972. A one-day, 36-hole, better-ball, competition held just before the Memorial Day weekend, the tournament honors the late Charles Wilson, a former member of the club who served as Director of the War Production Board under presidents Roosevelt and Truman during two wars.
Scarsdale also has a history hosting MGA championships as the club welcomed the MGA Senior Amateur in 2002, as well as the MGA/MetLife Boys Championship in 1978 and 1974.
The MGA Senior Net Four-Ball Tournament is played in a better-ball format, and is open to male amateur members of MGA member clubs who will have reached their 50th birthday by May 3, 2010. Players must have a current USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.0. All entrants are subject to MGA rules and regulations. Partners need not be members of the same club, but must both be members of an MGA member club.
