Rice, Montgelas Win MGA Mixed Pinehurst
GREENWICH, Conn. (September 17, 2009) – Wee Burn Country Club’s Jay Rice and Becky Montgelas teamed up to win their third MGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship at the Round Hill Club in Greenwich, Conn. Rice and Montgelas carded a three-under-par 68 to win by four strokes over Kile Keever and James Keever of Woodway Country Club.
Montgelas and Rice, a former Connecticut State Open champion, found their rhythm early and finished with a 33 on the front nine. A back-nine 35 sealed the victory for Rice and Montgelas who also teamed up to win this event in 1997 and 2007.
Helen Bernstein and Adam Kugler of Alpine finished in third place after carding a 74. Former champion Gail Flanagan of Westchester teamed up with Dennis McCauley and finished in a tie for fourth place with Catherine and Rick Ross of Knickerbocker Country Club.
All teams played under the Pinehurst scoring format: Both players hit drives, then each plays a second shot with the other’s ball. After the second shot, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed. Alternate shots are then continued into the hole. On par-three holes, the choice must be made after the tee shots.
