Park, Casalino Lead U.S. Open Local Qualifiers at Siwanoy
BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (May 19, 2009) – Amateur Paul Park of Wayne, N.J., and Anthony Casalino of Harrison, N.Y., fired rounds of two-under-par 69 to share medalist honors and lead the field of 120 players during U.S. Open Championship local qualifying held Monday, May 19 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y. All qualifiers advance to sectional qualifying, the last stage before the 2009 U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage Black.
Amateur Max Buckley of Rye, N.Y., the 2007 Carter Cup-MGA Junior Stroke Play champion, led a group of four players to finish with one-under-par rounds of 70, including 2007 Met PGA Professional champion Greg Bisconti of South Salem, N.Y. Ryan George of Cliffside Park, N.J., and Brian Lamberti of Granite Springs, N.Y., also finished with rounds of 70 to advance to sectional qualifying. Ben Hoffhine of Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Dan Abbondandolo of Oyster Bay, N.Y., finished tied for seventh and will advance after carding rounds of even-par 71. Amateur, and former Duke University golf team captain, Michael Quagliano survived an eight-man playoff to capture the final qualifying spot after finishing with a one-over-par 72. England’s Paul Dwyer and Tony DeMaria of White Plains, N.Y., were also part of the playoff after rounds of 72 and will be the first and second alternates, respectively.
Today’s event was the last of five U.S. Open Local Qualifying Rounds conducted by the Metropolitan Golf Association. The event is open to both professional and amateur golfers with a USGA Handicap Index of 1.4 or better. Today’s qualifiers advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, scheduled for Monday, June 8, at Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club, both in Purchase, N.Y. Sectional qualifying is the final stage before the 109th U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage State Park (Black Course) in Farmingdale, N.Y., on June 18-21.
