Preakness Hills Set for MGA Senior Amateur
April 1, 2009 — The 2009 MGA season officially begins with the 82nd playing of the MGA Senior Amateur Championship, to be held Monday and Tuesday, May 4 and 5, at Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, N.J. Visit the MGA Web site, www.mgagolf.org, to enter the event, which features a field of the top senior amateur players in the Met Area. Defending champion Ron Vannelli (left) of Metuchen will be joined by 2007 winner Jay Blumenfeld of Mountain Ridge and 2004 champion Doug Vergith of St. George’s.
The two-day event is the first MGA championship to be played at Preakness Hills since the 2003 MGA Senior Open Championship, won by Darrell Kestner of Deepdale. The Willie Tucker-designed golf course has hosted a number of MGA championships, including the 1993 Ike–MGA Stroke Play Championship, won by George Zahringer III of Deepdale, and the 1998 MGA Senior Open, won by Russell Helwig of Essex Fells. A great golf course and an accomplished field of amateurs should make for an exciting MGA Senior Amateur at Preakness Hills.
The MGA Senior Amateur is open to players 55 years of age or older with USGA Handicap Indexes of 9.0 or better. The field will play 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 4th, after which a cut will be made and the low 30 scores and ties who will advance to the second round. Winners in each of four age categories will also be determined after 18 holes. The championship will conclude with 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, May 5th.
Complete coverage of the MGA Senior Amateur will be available at www.mgagolf.org, where you can also find live scoring for the final round.
