Wilson, Liu Advance to Round of 16 at U.S. Junior
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 23, 2009) - Former MGA/MetLife Boys champion Cameron Wilson of Norwalk, Conn., advanced to the Round of 16 today at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Trump National-Bedminster in Bedminster, N.J. Wilson defeated Nicholas Austin of Midlothian, Va, 2 & 1. He will be joined in the Round of 16 by 13-year-old Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y., who dispatched Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., 4 & 2.
Wilson took an early lead in his match and was 2-up through the 10th hole. He stumbled early on the back nine, losing 11th, 12th and 13th holes to go one down. Wilson rebounded with pars at the 14th and 15th holes and a clutch birdie at the 17th won the match. Liu, on the other hand, won the second hole to go 1-up and never looked back in a round that included a birdie and only one bogey. Wilson will take on Ben Itterman of Carlsbad, Calif., and Liu will face off against Nicholas Reach of Moscow, Pa. David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., the 2009 Met Junior champion, lost his second-round match, 3 & 2, to Wyndham Clark of Greenwood Village, Colo.
On the Girls’ Championship side, Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., continued to romp through the competition, this time with a win over Ginger Howard of Bradenton, Fla., 3 & 2, to advance to the Round of 16. Her fellow Met Area native, Suzie Lee of East Northport, N.Y., also advanced with a 3 & 1 win over Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Canada. Chung will play Victoria Tanco of Argentina in the Round of 16 and Lee will take on Doris Chen of Bradenton, Fla.
