Branton Woods Duo Wins MGA/MetLife Men's Net Team Title
July 8, 2009 – Kevin Liberati and Frank Petrocelli of Branton Woods Golf Club fired a 12-under-par net 60 to earn a victory at the 33rd MGA/MetLife Men’s Net Team Championship held at Hempstead Golf and Country Club in Hempstead, N.Y. Finishing in a tie for second place with net 62s were Bill Sturman and David Verner of Ridgewood Country Club (Conn.) and the home-course team of James Sweeney and Jim McCarthy.
The Branton duo shot an impressive 29 on the front nine and kept the momentum going with a 31 on the back to claim their first MGA championship. “This is great,” said Liberati. “We want to thank the MGA as well as MetLife for being a great sponsor.”
What helped propel the team to victory was a string of five birdies in a row on the front nine as well as a surging finish, in which Liberati and Petrocelli birdied six of their last seven holes. Greg Falzon of MetLife was on hand to present the winners with their awards and emphasized the importance of the nearly three-decades-long partnership between the MGA and MetLife.
The MGA/MetLife Men’s Net Team Championship is played at 18 holes of stroke play, net better-ball against the field, with players competing at 90 percent of their Course Handicap. Each team member must have a USGA Handicap Index between 5.0 and 24.0, with the team total not exceeding 40.0.
