April 20, 2009Louise Suggs, the first female inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame and one of the 13 founders of the LPGA in 1950, will be recognized for her pioneering career achievements by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at their 58th National Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Suggs will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor. Eight-time major championship winner Arnold Palmer will also be on hand to help celebrate the achievements of his longtime assistant, Donald ‘Doc’ Giffin, who will receive the Winnie Palmer Award.

Other award winners include former MGA Senior Director of Rules and Competitions Gene Westmoreland (Distinguished Service Award), George Peper (Linc Werden Golf Journalism Award) Donald ‘Doc’ Giffin (Winnie Palmer Award), Rolex (Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award) D.J. Gregory (Mary Bea Porter Award), Rockaway River CC (Club of the Year), and the Putman Family (Family of the Year).

The MGWA’s National Awards Dinner is the largest (and longest running) golf dinner held annually in the U.S. All of golf’s governing bodies actively support the dinner—the USGA, PGA of America, the LPGA, PGA Tour and Champions Tour—and some 700 industry leaders and local golfers attend. Proceeds from the dinner are distributed to the Metropolitan (New York) area caddie scholarship programs and the MGA Foundation. More than $950,000 has been raised over the years for charitable endeavors.
