Wilson, Three Others Advance to Met Junior Semifinals
DENVILLE, N.J. (July 16, 2008) – Day two of the 91st Met Junior Championship, sponsored by MetLife, is in the books and the stage is set for a fantastic final day of competition tomorrow at Rockaway River Country Club in Denville, N.J. Today’s round of 16 and quarterfinal matches saw only one major upset, last year’s runner-up Max Bischel of Cranbury, N.J., falling to Dillon Corbo of Montville, N.J. in a quarterfinal match that took 20 holes to be decided. Corbo would not be denied on his home course as he was victorious in what was the match of the day.
Former MGA/MetLife Boys champion Cameron Wilson of Norwalk, Conn., continued his string of fine play with a 3 and 1 quarterfinal victory over Conner Monaghan of Garden City, N.Y. Anthony Aloi of Plainsboro, N.J., will square off against Wilson tomorrow after a commanding 3 and 1 victory of his own over Andrew Tursky of Hillsborough, N.J., in the quarterfinals. Rounding out the semifinalists will be Michael Furci of Sayville, N.Y., who defeated Rye, N.Y.’s Sam Weiss 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.
Today’s play saw the end of an impressive championship run by the youngest player in the field, 13-year-old Mark Reilly of Babylon, N.Y. Yesterday Reilly was impressive in defeating older and more accomplished players Eric Salizzoni of Oradell, N.J., and Ryan Homola of Amityville, N.Y., before running into championship-favorite Cameron Wilson in the round of 16 today.
The semifinal round is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday with Wilson facing off against Aloi. Corbo and Furci will tee off directly after the first group. Complete results for all rounds, as well as live scoring for Thursday’s matches, are available by visiting the MGA Web site at www.mgagolf.org.
