FOLEY GETS TO SEMIS AFTER 22-HOLE THRILLER
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (August 3, 2007) – A thrilling 22-hole quarterfinal match capped an action-packed Friday at the 105th Met Amateur Championship at Wykagyl Country Club. Kevin Foley of Neshanic Valley (N.J.) outlasted 14-year-old Cameron Wilson of Shorehaven (Conn.) in a match that went four extra holes. Foley, runner-up in last year’s Met Amateur at Baltusrol, is a sophomore at Penn State and was the Big 10 Freshman of the Year in 2007.
Also advancing to the semifinals were qualifying medalist Marc Issler of Pine Barrens, who defeated Adam Fuchs of Hamlet Windwatch 1-up; Matt Kleinrock of Forest Hill Field Club, who beat Joe Saladino of Huntington 2 & 1; and host club favorite Greg Rohlf, the former Wykagyl member and winner of the 1998 Ike and 1999 Met Am, who had a 3 & 2 victory over Al Falussy.
However, the match of the day was Foley vs. Wilson. The two talented young players with rapidly growing tournament resumes had a seesaw battle, with Wilson, the 2006 MGA/MetLife Boys champion, going 3 up through 12 holes. Foley then mounted a furious comeback, winning four out of the next five holes to reach the 18th tee with a 1-up lead. The 19-year-old Foley then pushed his drive into the water hazard, while Wilson hit his approach shot to 10 feet and won the hole.
Foley and Wilson halved the first three extra holes with pars. On the 142-yard fourth hole, Wilson’s tee shot trickled off the green and left him a difficult chip, while Foley hit a 9-iron to 15 feet. After Wilson’s chip came up short, Foley calmly rolled in the birdie putt to win the match. Though Foley was the victor, Wilson was the talk of the tournament throughout the day. At just 14 years old, his length and game, as well as his composure, impressed opponents, officials and spectators.
The final four players feature three collegiate players, all from New Jersey. In addition to Foley (Penn State), Matt Kleinrock plays on the golf team at Jacksonville University, and Marc Issler plays for High Point (N.C.) University. Rohlf, who at 42 years old was the oldest player to reach match play, will try to stem the tide of youth that has dominated so far at Wykagyl.
In the first match, Issler will play Kleinrock beginning at 11 a.m. Foley and Rohlf will square off at 11:10 a.m. The two winners of Saturday’s semifinal matches advance to the 36-hole final on Sunday, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Log on towww.mgagolf.org for live scoring throughout all remaining matches.
