The First Tee of Metropolitan New York Wins Barclays Tri-Match at Liberty National
The First Tee of Metropolitan New York squared off against The First Tee of Massachusetts in the First Annual, The Barclays Cup Tri-Match. The event was contested at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. The event was sponsored by Barclays who also sponsored the entire Barclays Cup Series. The Barclays Cup Tri-Match is a competition where the two teams played a Ryder Cup style format of golf, with the scoring including the answering of Life Skills’ questions. The teams played matches of Best Ball of two and alternate shot for nine holes each. They also played an additional nine holes of match play, which totaled 27 holes. All three formats include the answering of Life Skills’ questions on the course. The match was very closely contested, but in the end, The First Tee of Metropolitan New York (TFTMNY) prevailed. TFTMNY scored 1,265 points (combined total of golf and Life Skills) to The First Tee of Massachusetts (TFT Mass) total of 1,020. TFTMNY was lead by the strong play and leadership of Bronx native, Joe Lee. In addition, fellow team mates, Sarah Roe of Floral Park, Matt Lyons of New York City, and Kuriko Tsukiyama of Bogota NJ, contributed with well played golf and prefect scores on the Life Skills questions. TFT Mass held scoring close throughout the day, keeping on par with their golf and Life Skills. The team was lead by Taunton Mass native, Trevor Bernier. TFT Mass had additional support from Sarah Garlick of Somers CT, John Beadle of N. Attleboro Mass, and Erica Silk of Wilbraham, Mass. The team from Massachusetts showed great sportsmanship throughout the competition but especially in defeat. Both teams extended congratulations, displaying the mutual admiration that had developed during their time together in New Jersey.
TFT Massachusetts will host the Tri-Match in 2008, and at that time The First Tee of Ireland will join the event. The Irish team did not participate this year but will be ready to field a team next year and will host in 2009.
