CAMERON WILSON WINS THE 38TH MGA/METLIFE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP
SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y. (August 11, 2006) - Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, Conn., defeated Curtis Loop of New Canaan, Conn., 4 & 3 in the 18-hole final match to win the 38th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club on Shelter Island, N.Y.
Wilson, who has four top-ten finishes on the AJGA circuit this season, played exceptionally well all week In four previous matches, Wilson did not have to play past the 15th hole. He continued that streak in his semifinal match this morning against Thomas Walter of New York City, when he made par on the 14th hole to win the match 6 & 5.
Wilson’s opponent, Curtis Loop, had tougher time in his morning match, edging Brian Hwang of Happauge, N.Y., one-up to advance to the finals. However, Loop was unable to hold off the charging Wilson, who jumped out to an early one-up lead when he won the first hole. Wilson added to his one-up lead when he won the par-five sixth and par-three seventh holes. Loop got one back at the eighth hole, but stumbled again on the par-three ninth with a double bogey. Wilson capitalized on the mistake and made par to move to three-up.
Wilson, who will be a freshman this fall at the St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Conn., but played on the varsity golf team this season, sealed his victory with wins at the 12th and 13th holes. He made par to Loop’s bogey at the 12th and his birdie at the 13th put him four up. After both players had pars at the 14th, Wilson won the championship.
The 13-year-old Wilson was very happy after the victory, his first in an MGA event. “I was not hitting the ball well on the front nine, but I was chipping really well and that gave me the confidence to win,” he said.
