MGA 2004 Tournament Season Begins: Glen Head to Host MGA Senior Amateur
ELMSFORD, N.Y.-The Metropolitan Golf Association’s 2004 tournament season kicks off with the 77th MGA Senior Amateur Championship at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, NY, on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 4-5. It will be followed by the 12th MGA Senior Net Tournament at Westchester Hills Golf Club in White Plains, NY, on Thursday, May 6.
The MGA Senior Amateur is open to players 55 years of age or older with USGA Handicap Indexes of 9.0 or less. The field of 196 will play 18 holes on Tuesday, after which the field is cut to the low 20 scorers who advance to 18 holes on Wednesday. Prizes will be awarded to the overall winner, and also in each of four age categories.
The MGA Senior Amateur has an impressive list of previous winners that includes Dick Siderowf of Century, a two-time British Amateur champion and seven-time New Jersey Amateur champ Bob Housen of Manasquan River GC. Other top contenders include John Baldwin of Meadow Brook Club, a two-time MGA Player of the Year and the 2002 British Senior Open Amateur Champion, John Martin of Deepdale GC, defending champion Stephen Rose of Fresh Meadow CC, as well as last year’s runners-up, Jeff Johns of Hackensack GC and Bob Howe of Winged Foot GC. Recent Senior Amateur winners Joe Polizzano of Sterling Farms GC (2002), Shawn McLoughlin of Ridgewood GC (CT) (2001) and Ned Steiner of Mountain Ridge (2000), will all be on-hand to compete.
The tournament will be played at beautiful Glen Head Country Club, which opened in 1948. The golf course, designed in part by Devereaux Emmett, sits in a parkland setting and plays over rolling ground with trees a constant factor.
The MGA Senior Net Tournament is open to players fifty years of age and older with a Handicap Index of 18.0 or less and will be played at 18 holes stroke play. In addition to the overall winner, gross and net prizes will be awarded in each of four age categories.
Live scoring will be provided for the MGA Senior Amateur by the USGA’s live scoring system, TPP RealTime, and will be available on the MGA’s website, www.mgagolf.org.
