Corbo, Fillian, Kim, and Barnes-Wolf Advance to Semifinals of the 87th MGA Junior Championship
Denville, NJ-Sixteen year-old Montville, NJ native and club champion of Rockaway River CC, Mike Corbo led a group of four determined juniors, who survived the third and quarterfinal rounds of the 87th MGA/MetLife Junior Championship on the second day of play at Corbo’s own Rockaway River Country Club in Denville, NJ. In addition to Corbo, Sun Ho Kim of Flushing, NY, Tyler Barnes-Wolf of Old Tappan, NJ, and Pat Fillian of Neptune, NJ all survived a day of hard-fought matches that began with sixteen juniors. The four advance to the semifinal rounds tomorrow, beginning at 8:00 AM.
Corbo controlled his match against Jarryd Wood, of Wantagh, NY winning the match 5 and 4. He reached the afternoon round with a 5 and 3 victory over 2003 Carter Cup champion, Brendan Tracy of New York City. Kim reached the semifinals with an impressive 3 and 2 victory over 2003 MGA Boys Champion Mark Costanza in the afternoon, on the heels of a 4 and 2 victory over 2003 NJPGA Junior Open champion Mark Issler
Like Corbo, Barnes-Wolf dominated both of his matches today. He defeated Colin Dolph of Huntington, NY 4 and 3 followed by a 5 and 4 victory over Robert Cronheim, who ousted Andrew Giuliani in the second round. Fillian edged his way past Mark Neider of New Canaan, CT 2 and 1 in the morning before gaining momentum into tomorrow’s matches after a 5 and 4 victory over Ryan Shallcross of Westfield, NJ. The four juniors will return tomorrow for the semifinal and final rounds that will determine the winner of the nation’s oldest junior championship.
