Middle Bay hosted the 1974 Met Open and was scheduled to host the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Sectional
"We didn't expect it, but unfortunately we have to move on," Closs told Newsday. "We're facing a new reality."
Closs said the club suffered $3.5 million in damages and that insurance covered two-thirds but members and the club's board decided to forgo the rebuilding process. He also mentioned that about one third of the club's members left after Sandy, and that the club's closure will leave about 50 full-time employees out of work.

Middle Bay, founded in 1955, was originally a nine-hole public course before it was revamped into an 18-hole private facility by Alfred Tull. The club hosted the Met Open in 1974, won by Bob Bruno of Pelham with a score of 7-under-par (209). It was also scheduled to host the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Sectional Qualifier, which has since been moved to Garden City Country Club.
It is still unknown if the property will be closed for good.
