The four semifinalists currently stand as the top four in the MGA’s Player of the Year standings.
For the third straight year, Cavaliere advanced to the semifinals at the Met Amateur. Cavaliere beat medalist Jackson Roman of Sterling Farms in the Round of 16 before dispatching Mark Costanza of Baltusrol in the quarterfinals. Both wins came by 2-and-1 margins. Against Roman, Cavaliere won four straight holes to start the back nine to turn a 1-down deficit into a 3-up advantage. Versus Costanza, Cavaliere tied the match on the par-3 12th with birdie before making par on Nos. 15 and 17 to seal the win.
“Jackson was incredible this morning,” said Cavaliere, who continues his strong play following his win in the New York State Open. “I was amazed by how consistent he was. Getting through that match, I was thrilled. As soon as I saw Mark, I was like, ‘Perfect, I am going to have another killer one this afternoon’. Honestly, two of the hardest matches I have ever played in this tournament. To get through these two is solid, and I am feeling great about it,” added the 27-year old.
Lowe topped Drew Mulcahy of Baltusrol in the quarterfinals, 4-and-3, after edging Adam Friedman 2-and-1 in the Round of 16. Lowe never trailed against Friedman and led by as many as three. Lowe found himself two down after three holes against Mulcahy before winning five of the next six holes to build a 2-up lead that he wouldn’t surrender.
“Everybody who’s left is excellent,” said Lowe, the reigning MGA Player of the Year. “It is tough to advance this far. Fortunately, I was able to get through today, but anything can happen at any time, and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
Dean advanced past Chris DeJohn of Arcola in the Round of 16 by a 4-and-3 margin. In the quarterfinals against Jack Chung of Greenwich Country Club, Dean needed 19 holes to advance. While Chung tied the match with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, Dean won the first extra hole after Chung conceded, having hit a ball out of bounds on the hole.
“Everything was solid today,” noted Dean. “Being steady off the tee allowed me to not put too much stress on other parts of my game. I have been playing well this summer and want to win this week, with it being my last tournament of the summer.”
Reed, the younger of the Greysermans, defeated Ben Loomis of Winged Foot in the Round of 16, 3-and-2. In the quarterfinals, Reed edged Matt Rawitzer of Meadow Brook, 2-and-1. Against Loomis, Reed won the first four holes before seeing the lead evaporate by the turn. A par on No. 14, a birdie on No. 15, and a birdie on No. 16 clinched the match. In the quarterfinals, Reed took a 2-up lead on the par-4 15th with a birdie before closing out the match with back-to-back pars.
“The rough is the defense of the golf course right now with all the rain,” said Reed. “That makes getting off the tee paramount. The putter has been good this week and all summer, trying to keep it rolling.”
Cavaliere and Dean Greyserman will square off in the lead semifinal match at 7:30 a.m., with Lowe and Reed Greyserman following at 7:45 a.m. The winners will square off in a 36-hole championship match on Sunday. Both Cavaliere and Lowe are looking to return to the final, with Cavaliere having done so on three occasions (2018, ’23, ’24) and Lowe once (2014)
The winner of the Met Amateur is exempt into the U.S. Amateur, which takes place August 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Fransico, Calif.
