The group shot 9-under on the day, with the scoring format taking three of the four team members’ scores for the team total. David Kim paced the squad, co-medaling with Seiji Sako of Golf Association of Philadelphia in the individual competition at 3-under over the 36 holes. In the morning, Benjamin Spencer (2-under 70), Jack Kelley (1-under 71) and David Kim (even-par 72) put the team in the mix, just one shot behind Western Pennsylvania Golf Association, whose efforts were propelled by a 6-under 66 – the day’s low score – from Ravi Desai.
In the afternoon, Kim and Landon O’Hara both carded 3-under 69s – tying for the afternoon’s low score alongside Buffalo District Golf Association’s Dylan Brooks – while Spencer added an even-par round for the full team effort.
“Pretty cool,” Kim said of bringing home Maryland’s first-ever win.
“Pretty special and there’s that big trophy we have now and our names are going to be on that so it’s pretty cool,” said Landon O’Hara.
“I was 4-over through 10,” Ben Spencer said of some early second round struggles. “I was trying my best not to get down on myself and had a nice chip in on 11 and kind of got the momentum going. Made three more birdies and finished at even par so I was happy about that.”
Maryland finished nine shots clear of Golf Association of Philadelphia, who finished at even-par for the day.
The MGA team finished in third place. Zach Berger of Remsenberg, N.Y., Callahan Fay of Harrison, N.Y., Josh Yan of Newburgh, N.Y., Ethan Yao of Manhasset, N.Y., represented the MGA, which hosted for the first time since 2013. The team finished 3-over. Individually, Yao finished with the best score among the three at 2-under.
Team MGA sat in 5th place after the first round at a combined 2-over and six shots back of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association for the lead. Yao, who used a birdie on the ninth hole – his last of the day – to finish 2-under in his first round, led the way for the MGA in the early going. Berger, making his fourth appearance in the Williamson Cup, finished his first round at 2-over, as did Yan.
In the afternoon, Berger birdied the final four holes to finish the round at 2-under and help lift the MGA into the top three. Yao also birdied 18 for the second time on the day to close out his round at even par. Yan ended his afternoon at 1-over.
The Syracuse District Golf Association will host the 2027 Williamson Cup at a venue to be determined.
The Williamson Cup was established in 1964 by A. Fred Williamson in memory of his father, one of the original founders of Winged Foot Golf Club and a long-time member of the USGA Executive Committee. The inaugural event was held at Winged Foot, contested by the four charter Williamson Cup Association Members from Metropolitan New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Buffalo. By 1968, the Williamson Cup welcomed teams from Canada. Though the participating associations have varied somewhat during the 60-plus-year history of the Williamson Cup, the core values have been maintained. Over the years, lasting friendships have developed between contestants and teammates after competing in such a special event.
