SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (July 16, 2025) – In what was the first-ever title match between brothers in the 108 playings of the Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife, Jonathan Weinberg edged his older brother, Alexander Weinberg, by a 1-up margin to hoist the Mandeville Trophy at Southampton Golf Club.

Jonathan started strong with a birdie on the par-4 first. Though Alexander returned the match to tied with a win on the third hole, Jonathan won the fifth hole to regain the lead, which he then held for the majority of the match thanks to birdies on Nos. 7, 11 and 13 – all of which pushed his lead back to two holes after Alexander had trimmed it to one. While Alexander produced a pair of victories on Nos. 15 and 17 to return the match to tied, Jonathan once again had an answer, making par on the closer to capture the title.
Jonathan said course management was a big part of his approach over the last two days, giving a lot of credit to caddie, Zach, for his advice.
“It was a lot of course management,” said the 17-year-old Jonathan of New York, N.Y.. “It was a lot of fun with Zach out there. Today was all about staying steady and keeping everything in front of me.”
Alexander, 18, got one back on the par-4 15th with a par to set up a tight closing stretch. Holding a 1-up lead, Jonathan made double bogey on the par-5 17th, while Alexander converted a birdie to tie the match with one hole remaining.
Unfazed, Jonathan made par on the par-4 18th hole to hold off Alexander’s comeback bid and capture the Met Junior Championship. Jonathan got up-and-down from the back green-side bunker for his par.
Despite the nail-biting finish, Jonathan said he loved getting the opportunity to play against his brother for the championship. He added that, of all the rounds in which it could have happened, he was glad it occurred in the championship match.
“I was looking forward to savoring the 18 holes with him,” Jonathan said. “You rarely get the opportunity to play with your brother, and it was something I’ll remember for a while.”
Asked about the win, Jonathan said it was a fantastic feeling to see his work pay off throughout the championship. He additionally expressed a desire to use the victory as momentum.
“It feels great,” Jonathan said. “I’ve been putting in great work, and I’m seeing the progress.”
To reach the championship match, Jonathan defeated Tucker Gongaware of New York, N.Y., in the semifinals. Alexander got past Josh Yan of Newburgh, N.Y., in the semifinals.
With the win, Jonathan is exempt into the 123rd Met Amateur Championship, which will be held at his home club, Old Oaks Country Club, from July 31 to August 3. The win is his first MGA title.
