WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (Jan 28, 2022) – This past summer, the MGA Foundation’s cornerstone program, GOLFWORKS, returned to Met Area clubs. In total, 147 GOLFWORKS interns worked at 39 clubs during the summer months, gaining valuable work, golf, and life experiences. In addition to the 147 interns participating in MGA programming, 18 former interns were hired directly by clubs, showcasing the relationships forged between intern and club during the GOLFWORKS program. With the season behind us and many interns back in school, we wanted to highlight some of the truly special individuals that make the program as good as it is. Today we get to know Charles Wireko in this GOLFWORKS Q&A.

Q- What club did you work at as a GOLFWORKS intern and what was your role there?
A- I worked at Westchester Hills Golf Club. My role there was primarily to help with outings and tournaments. I would be stationed and holes and help spot balls and let people know when they could hit.
Q- What surprised you about the experience, or what was something you learned that you didn’t expect?
A- I was surprised with how nice everyone was. I didn’t expect people to be mean, but everyone went out of their way to say hi and they genuinely were happy that I was helping them. It made the experience great for me because it was fun to see everyone else enjoying themselves.
Q- Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you enjoy doing?
A- In my free time I like to play sports and read. I played soccer in high school at St. Raymond’s and have played almost all my life. I’m a defender and was on the varsity team.
Q- Is this your first job and/or first job in golf? What was your experience like?
A- This was my first experience around golf. I grew up and live in the Bronx so I was never around golf growing up. I would say the experience has been a positive one and I have learned a lot about golf just by watching everyone play. I didn’t know much before but feel like I’m starting to learn a bit about the sport.
Q- What was your favorite part of your job? What did you learn?
A- I learned a lot about golf, like I said before. I would say my favorite part of the job was being able to be outside and be active. Especially during the summer when the weather is nice it’s great to be outside and with my job here I was moving around a good amount too which was a nice bonus.
Q- What do you want to do in the future?
A- I’m not entirely sure what I want to do yet. I just started college and I am looking to do something in business but I haven’t quite figured it out yet.
